Based on the classic 18th Century novel by Henry Fielding, this is a rollicking, raunchy, comic romp. Tom Jones is a young man of questionable birth adopted by Squire Allworthy. Tom finds his youth and personal attractions irresistible to ladies both young and old, including Molly a rustic wench, Jenny Waters a lady of warm heart and generous virtue, and Mrs Fitzpatrick a society lady seeking diversion from her oafish husband, Captain Fitzpatrick. Sophia Western, whom Tom truly loves, is being forced by her father Squire Western into a profitable marriage to Blifil. So many women seek Tom out for his love that soon his life becomes complicated not only by the numerous relationships, but also by the ladies’ male partners seeking revenge.
The 1963 British comedy film of the same name starred Albert Finney as the hero. It was one of the most critically acclaimed and popular comedies of its time, winning four Academy Awards - including Best Picture, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay and Original Score. It was also made into a memorable BBC adaptation in 1998.
The play is rich and rowdy, successfully capturing the essence of the original novel.
