C. S. Lewis was a shy Oxford don and writer of poetry, religious texts and children’s stories. He is probably best known for The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of novels for young people, which includes The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

The play is set in Oxford in the 1950s. C. S. Lewis (Paul Miller) and American poet Joy Davidman (Leona Wilson), start an exchange of literary correspondence. Joy visits Oxford with her son, Douglas (Daniel Simpson / Jack Tobin), and meets Lewis, who lives with his brother Major “Warnie” Lewis (Geoff Greenup). Her intellectual assertiveness delights Lewis but appals his condescending fellow academics (Douglas Knox, Terrence Neenan, David Hines, Ilio Vrckoski).

Lewis and Joy’s relationship develops from friendship, to a marriage of convenience for her immigration purposes, through to a deep, abiding love.

The play enjoyed a very successful run in both the West End and on Broadway. The 1993 movie of the same name was directed by Richard Attenborough and starred Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger, who both won Oscar nominations for their performances.

The play is poignant, humorous and ultimately optimistic, successfully capturing the real-life romance between the English author/academic and the American poet.
