14 May - 12 June 2004
'Johnny Belinda' is an inspiring, heart warming story of
a mother’s love.
In the 1930’s, a dedicated and humane doctor begins practice
in a small village in Nova Scotia. He transforms the world of a
deaf mute girl by teaching her to communicate. Local prejudice
threatens Belinda who is referred to as “The Dummy”.
She finds the future of herself and her child hanging in the balance.
Elmer Harris wrote 'Johnny Belinda' with wonderful humour and
insight. It has been produced throughout the world and televised
many times, 1958 Julie Harris, 1967 Mia Farrow. It was also filmed
in 1948 starring Jane Wyman for which she won an Oscar and in 1982
Rosanna Arquette.
