Val Farrow

Music and theatre have played a large part in Val’s life ever since she was a four year old peddling energetically on her grandmother’s pianola, playing the music and singing along with old shows such as White Horse Inn and Flora Dora. Little did she know that the first role she would play on stage fifteen years later would be Gretel in White Horse Inn. She feels very fortunate that her parents took the family to see wonderful live theatre when she was growing up.
Straight after leaving high school, Val joined the chorus of The Regals Musical Society and soon began playing character roles. It was there she met Jim Farrow, whom she later married. Together they did shows with Hurstville Musical Society before joining Miranda Musical Society, where they spent many years performing and raised three children at the foot of the stage. During that time, they also became members of The Guild Theatre. Jim joined first and then Val joined in 1989.
Since then she has enjoyed playing a variety of characters, some favourites being Sheila in The Shoe-Horn Sonata, Clara Soppitt in When We Are Married, Maggie Mundy in Dancing at Lughnasa, Miss Maple in Murdered to Death, Ethel Thayer in On Golden Pond, and Mrs Piper in Busybody. She has also been part of the crew for a number of shows, operating lights and sound, set dressing, as well as being a front of house manager. Val says ‘stage performances has become a family affair and it has been great to be in productions with our daughter and a son.’
.
‘Community Theatre has been an important part of the fabric of my life and an extension of family where I have made wonderful friendships. I love the fact that it brings live theatre into our local areas at a very reasonable ticket price so that it is readily available for all.’ – Val Farrow
