Auditions for Steel Magnolias
Directed by Sue Bunt
Dates: Wednesday, 8 July & Friday, 10 July
Venue: The Guild Theatre Rockdale, 87 Railway Street Cnr Walz Street, Rockdale NSW 2216
Performance Dates: 6 – 28 November (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday)

Set in a beauty salon in small town Louisiana, six strong willed women gather to share laughter, secrets and heartache. Steel Magnolias is a funny and moving celebration of friendship, resilience and the bonds that carry us through the joys and sorrows of life. With quick wit, sharp humour and moments that will leave you misty eyed, this timeless classic reminds us that true strength can be as delicate – and as enduring – as a magnolia blossom.
Characters:
Truvy Jones: 40-ish, owner of the beauty shop. She sees good in all, is long suffering, and provides a safe environment for her friends / clients
Annelle Dupuy-Desoto: 20-ish, a naïve and gentle character, with an air of mystery who works as Truvy’s assistant
Clairee Belcher: 60+ widow of former mayor, a figurehead of the community. Smart articulate and well liked
Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie: 20+ prettiest girl in town. Soft, but determined to the point of being stubborn
M’Lynn Eatenton: 50-ish Shelby’s mother and a career minded socially prominent woman who holds many of the town’s secrets. Often at loggerheads with her daughter
Ouiser Bordreaux: 60+ wealthy but disagreeable. Easily annoyed, set in her ways but non the less loveable, and deep down has a heart of gold.
Rehearsals will be twice a week, with a short break in September. Dates and times will depend on cast availability and hall booking commitments.
Audition process:
Please call director Sue Bunt on 0402057972 for an audition time or email sue_bunt@hotmail.com
Video auditions will be accepted but a face-to-face audition is much preferred. Please let Sue know which character/characters you will be auditioning for as this will impact on your audition time.
There will be readings provided for each of the characters. Sue would like to audition individual characters to tap into relationships. Each character will have a monologue and then will be paired: Truvy and Annelle; M’Lynn and Shelby; and Ouiser and Clairee for readings.
Director’s Vision:
“While I intend to stay true to the script, it would be nice to tease out those areas of humour and pathos so that the audience is fully engaged. The characters will all have southern accents and there are various guides on you tube that will assist auditionees with that. While all characters are unique in their own right, in no way will they be caricatures, but rather strong characters, who leave an imprint on your heart.” – Sue Bunt
